Distribution boards | Types of Boards
In an electrical installation, a distribution board is the main part. In general terms, the boards are cabinets that contain the connection, maneuver, command, measurement, protection, alarm and signaling devices that fulfill a specific function within an electrical system. Its main function is to protect each of the different circuits in which the installation is divided. They must also withstand short-circuit current levels.
To design a switchgear, certain considerations must be taken into account: whether it is for low or medium voltage and standards, to guarantee the continuity and protection of the switchgear and its operators. Several factors and variables must be taken into account before installing and designing a switchboard: Power to handle, Device Control System, Maintenance Policy, Safety of the facilities that will control and of the operators.
They must also undergo certain tests to check their functionality and effectiveness: Dielectric tests, thermal tests, short-circuit tests, degree of protection, mechanical maneuvers.
There are several types of boards, depending on their location:
Main distribution board: It is connected to the main power line and the circuits are derived from its Secondary distribution boards: They are powered by the main one, auxiliary in the protection and operation of sub- feeders
Step boards: Their purpose is to protect the derivations, which due to their feeder or subfeeder capacity, cannot be directly connected
Command boards: They contain safety and maneuver devices.
